Chris Pine as Green Lantern?
Now this is purely a rumor a this point but an interesting one nevertheless. Latino Review is saying that while nothing is set Chris Pine is the top pick to play the Hal Jordan version of Green Lantern. On the surface this makes perfect sense. While a name he isn’t the biggest and can still carve out a niche for himself ala Chris Evans. On the other hand there is, in my opinion, a much more interesting choice.
If you remember back in 2007 Warner Brothers was working on a full Justice League movie. Obviously it never happened. While the 2008 Writer’s Strike ultimately derailed the project it seemed to be doomed from day one from odd casting choices (Jay Baruchel as Maxwell Lord?) and just general lack of direction. What did work was rapper/actor Common as John Stewart. The quintesential conscious rapper he not only had the charisma but the, for lack of a better term, gravitas to play the more serious Green Lantern. More importantly it gave some much needed diversity to a predominantly white genre. Given DC’s slate of upcoming movies looks pretty diverse with Jason Momoa as Aquaman and Cyborg being featured players but considering Common is coming off Selma and is still interested it would be a great casting choice still. At least it won’t be Ryan Reynolds again.
Male Ghostbusters Being Developed
Another week another bit of Ghostbusters news. It was revealed that Sony is developing an all-male movie version called Ghost Corps. They have gone as far as to give creator Dan Ackroyd and director Ivan Reitman offices solely to work on this project. At this point The Russo Brothers (Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Community, Arrested Development) will direct and Drew Pearce (Iron Man 3, Mission Impossible 5) will write the script. While nobody is confirmed for the cast Chris Pratt and Channing Tatum are the top choices when it comes to leads (as expected).
While I realize Ackroyd has been obsessed with getting his own version of a movie out there for years I can’t help but wonder why. We already have Paul Feig’s all-female version being worked on. Ignoring the gender issue I just don’t think it’s wise to plan this far ahead. While a new Ghostbusters is sure to be a hit on nostalgia alone who’s to say it will be THAT big? Not only that but trying to ape the Marvel Universe theory doesn’t seem like the best idea for this particular franchise. Comic books have a whole universe to play with while Ghostbusters has gone great movie and one kinda alright movie. They’ve assembled a great team, no doubt. But at this point I’m still a bit wary.
Hawkeye To Appear in Captain America: Civil War
Slowly but surely we are the doors for a straight up Hawkeye movie. While mentioned a bit offhand we learned that Jeremy Renner will be in Captain America: Civil War. While we don’t know what role he will play in the movie the fact that he’s included is encouraging for a Hawkeye mark like me. This means that the movie will now feature appearances from Hawkeye, Iron Man, Falcon, Frank Grillo as Crossbones and Chadwick Boseman as Black Panther. Not to mention the rumors of the new Spider-Man making an appearance. At a certain point I can’t help but wonder if it’d be easier to just call it Avengers 2.5.
