Douchebag Batman on Patrol- SDCC 2014

Now full disclosure I was not at the con. Frankly if I want to get shoved by people in cosplay I have a local con for that. Regardless tons of big news came out of the con and that’s what we’re looking at here. Now I’m sure I am missing some but to me this is some of the biggest news to come out of this year’s SDCC.

Marvel Drops So Much Science
So the big panel of the con was Marvel Studios and they certainly delivered. There are a lot of bits so lets get started.

– The villain in Ant-Man will be Yellowjacket. I doubt it’s Michael Douglas playing a schizophrenic Hank Pym so it’ll be interesting to see play out.
– Ant-Man and Avengers: Age of Ultron footage was shown and it sounds pretty fun.
– Josh Brolin came out with the Infinity Gauntlet. That just sounds awesome.
– James Gunn announced that not only did he sign on to Guardians of the Galaxy 2 but also that it would come out July 28, 2017. Glad to see James Gunn given so much faith by Marvel. Funny to think this is the same guy that did Slither and Super.

Screen Gems and Sam Raimi announce Last of Us Movie
Screen Gems and Sam Raimi announced that they will be adapting The Last of Us into a movie. Based on one of the best Playstation 3 games it’s a mix of The Road, post-apocalypse and zombie movie. While nothing is set in stone at the moment concerning casting and script I am absolute hyped to hear about this.

Sam Raimi Announces Evil Dead TV Show
Okay so there’s not too much to go on here but here we go. During The Last of Us panel Raimi mentioned that there was an Evil Dead TV show in the works. All he really revealed was that he was currently writing with Ivan Raimi and that Bruce Campbell would be involved. A TV show about Ash? Oh hells yeah!

Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman and Batfleck shown
With all the nerd outrage and hoopla about the movie I’m glad to say these images look alright. No matter what people say about the choice of Affleck he looks fine as an older Batman. The bigger thing was Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman and the costume looks good. Kind of a mix of the Wonder Woman armor and Xena it looks great for a big screen adaption. We also got a view of the teaser which made it’s way online. I’m sure it’ll be pulled down before this is put up but whatevs. Basically we get a shot of the Bat Signal and shots of an armored Batman ala Dark Knight Returns. Hopefully this is a sign of good things to come.

Godzilla 2 Announced
After the success of Godzilla the announcement of a sequel isn’t too surprising. It’s also not that surprising to hear that Gareth Edwards will be returning to direct. He more than delivered as the director; enough to get a Star Wars spinoff. The big surprise was not only would this movie have more Godzilla but Rodan, Mothra and King Ghidorah would show up. Yeah, that’s badass.

WWE Studios Show New Trailers
Oh WWE Studios, how I love to mock you. First we got a trailer to Leprechaun: Origins starring the WWE’s Hornswaggle, a little person who does a leprechaun gimmick. Yeah, it was as offensive as it sounds. The big thing though is that the are trying to play the movie off as a serious horror movie. Heck the original was at least a bit tongue in cheek so you can’t even say they’re trying to be like the original. It feels off and uninteresting. I’m cautiously optimistic about See No Evil 2.

On the one hand there is a decent crew working on the movie. The Soska sisters, no matter what faults they do have, are fairly good directors. They are very good at the visual aspect of directing. Danielle Harris and Katherine Isabelle are also in the movie and they’re pros when it comes to horror. On the other hand See No Evil wasn’t all that great in the first place. Even worse I imagine it’d lead to a Kane push on TV which is always boring. At this point it’s very much wait and see.

Tusk Trailer
After the success of Red State it’s great to know Kevin Smith is sticking around the horror genre. This time it’s with Tusk and it looks bonkers. Starring Michael Parks, Justin Long and Haley Joel Osment it’s about a man turning his prisoner into a human walrus. Based on a Smodcast he did a year or two ago this is the kind of weird and original horror I dig. More importantly we have the Haley Joel Osment comeback still going strong which I more than support.

Guillermo del Toro shows off Crimson Peak Footage
Rejoice everyone, Guillermo del Toro is returning to horror. Actually it was announced a week or two ago but he showed off the trailer at SDCC. While nothing has made its way online yet io9 has a full run down of the trailer and it sounds pretty great. Starring Tom Hiddleston and Jessica Chastain this sounds like the kind of atmospheric and visually stunning horror we get from Guillermo del Toro. This description alone has me absolutely hyped.
