A Letter to Fox’s Gotham TV Show

Dear Gotham,

Congratulations! Not only have you been picked up for a full season but the trailer debut during 24: Live Another Day has gotten some pretty positive buzz. With your solid cast and built in fan base you should be set for life. There’s one big negative you seem to be clinging to though, the established characters.

Not all of them mind you. Jim Gordon as the rookie detective makes for a great point of view character for the series. In fact the Gotham City Police Department cast as a whole make for great protagonists. No I mean the other characters, especially the villains. I never found the Penguin that interesting to begin with so him being played by the spazzy dude in Accepted is even less fun. Or how about tween Poison Ivy? What could we possibly gain from seeing her before was a botanist let alone had powers? I guess young Bruce Wayne could make for a good starting point but why bother with a Catwoman as a kid? Not only does it feel too much like a fanboy wink and a nudge but doesn’t Gordon being able to stop them make Batman look weaker? It just seems like a bit of a bad idea all around.

At the very least go beyond the obvious selections. Batman has one of the deepest rogues galleries in all of comics. There are plenty of villains you could use that are not only interesting but are easily adaptable to television. Heck you could do a whole season around Calendar Man alone. I guess all I’m asking is to be more The Wire and less Smallville. I guarantee you that it would be much more interesting than Batman Babies.

Thanks in Advance,
Douchebag Batman

About Douchebag Batman

If you found this blog, I probably know you personally. Basically I'm using this for movie reviews, MMA previews, and the occasional wackiness from out of left field. Shout out to the horror short Welcome to the Party for the hella boss avatar. I'm not very good at selling this, am I? Anyway just check it out. You'll be filled with laughter. From my actual writing or realizing "Wow this guy needs an editor".
