UFN 3.5: Return of the Dragon Followup

Before Lyoto Machida even entered the cage the Rogers Centre was already abuzz. There was an electricity in the air that hadn’t been felt in a while. As “Lunatic Fringe” began playing over the speakers the 55,000 fans became unglued. Randy “The Natural” Couture made his way to the cage to an arena full of screaming fans. As the cage is closed behind the living legend you could feel that something special was going to happen tonight.

As the bell rang you could see something in the eyes of the two warriors. In Couture’s you could see determination. A glimmer of the old Couture that was ready for one last go. In Machida’s you could see the killer that had seemingly disappeared. With the first round starting both men did what they did best. Machida staying on the outside. Getting some vicious leg kicks and punches in on the veteran. Randy getting inside on Randy and hitting a good left hook. In a reversal of roles, it’s Machida that gets in some great punches in the clinch. The amazing thing, this doesn’t stop Randy. It’s as if he had an aside with Father Time before the fight and said “Let me go out there one last time. Let me be the best I can be”. Using head movement envied by fighters that are half of his age, he escapes several hits. Despite losing the round, Randy is the epitome of determination. Never stopping, never falling back.

You couldn’t tell this was the second round. Both fighters come out with just as much energy as before. Machida gets in a nice flurry on Randy but the veteran quickly gets up. Showing little signs of wear. They stand-off and…
